Course Description                     Twice weekly, Trimester 2 (West) or 3 (East)

Eighth Grade General Music is intended to foster further excitement for lifelong learning in music for the soon-to-be upper school student. In 8th Grade General Music, we will study twenty masters of composition along with their works. Class topics will include the characters and characteristics of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century periods in music. Active listening, following guided listening maps, classroom presentations, and composing music in the style being studied are means to this end.  In addition, eighth grade students are provided a broad review of the music literacy they have learned; students will reach the pinnacle of the Conversational Solfege curriculum.

Course Goals: Students will:

Learn to recognize and categorize styles and eras of music through active listening
Learn to follow classical-style music through creative listening maps
Explore and learn to recognize works by recognized composers in Western music
Analyze and describe different styles of music from the studied musical periods
Continue musical literacy through the Conversational Solfege curriculum
