Quotes:
“I hate when people ask what a book is about. People who read for plot, people who
suck out the story like the cream filling in an Oreo, should stick to
comic strips and soap operas.
‘What is it about?’ Every book worth a damn is about emotions
and love and death and pain.
It’s about words! It’s
about a man [or woman] dealing with life.”
J.R. Moehringer The Tender Bar
“For a freshman, instant gratification is too
slow.”

The process of writing was
important. Even though the finished product is completely
meaningless.
"'Berlioz put it this
way: A life without once reading Hamlet is like a life spent
in a coal mine.'"

Murakami Kafka on the Shore

Topics for parents:
I would
suggest you open the tab course outline/syllabus, which explains a
number of things and gives a more comprehensive view of the course.
Process writing is discussed there—it is of the utmost importance.
Grades: Focus on the work, and the grades will take care of themselves.
Too often the
attention
is focused on the grade, not what produces it. I heard a lot of questions about
writing on parents’ night. That
is exactly right.
The way
to encourage this kind of thinking is to ask your son about what he is
reading. Discuss it with him.
See where the ideas lead you.
Don’t ask what grade he got on a paper. Once you understand process writing,
you’ll know that each grade is just a step along a path. Encourage him to think. His writing
will improve.
Take
him to a bookstore. Buy him something he wants to read. It needn’t be academic. (This will
also raise his SAT verbal scores in two years.) See extra credit
reading below. Again, it’s not
about the grade.
Extra
Credit Reading
Students are encouraged to read outside of class as
their time permits during the year.
They may earn extra credit added to any trimester for writing a
short report and making an oral presentation to the class. Students wishing to do so should see
me for details. The extra credit
reading may not be books assigned for another class, books read in
previous years, or books read in the last week of a trimester to raise
an average!
The
Freshman English Forum
The forum is ready. Soon it will be incorporated for
interactive assignments and other projects. You’ll be notified in class. But for
now, I would like you and your parents to post books you have liked and
would recommend to others. Be
sure to enter the author as well as title. You can make additional
comments, or write a review if you like.
Click on the link below to go to the forum
site. Register with the user
name and password you use at school.
If your parents would like to participate, they can register as
well.
