You will be responsible for beginning review for the final exam on your own.   You should go back over worksheets, essays, and notes in order to get ready for the final exam.   You do not want to go into this exam with no preparation, as this will not allow you to do your best.   The final exam will be an all essay exam.

Okay, cherubs, this is the last essay before the final.   You are to choose one of the four essays, and you will create an analytical essay that explores one of the quotes.   This essay needs to be a minimum of five paragraphs, and you must use quotes in each supporting paragraph.

Question one

1.“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy;--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made” (189).   This quote comes from the last page of Fitzgerald's book.   Construct an essay that analyzes the way in which Tom and Daisy were careless people.

Thesis:

  1. First example of the carelessness of Daisy and/or Tom.   Find a quote

2.  Second example of the carelessness of Daisy and Tom.   Find a quote

3.  Ultimate example of the carelessness of Daisy and Tom.   Find a quote.

Question two

2.“He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God.   So, he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning fork that had been struck upon a star.   Then he kissed her.   At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete” (117).   This is the first time that Gatsby' kisses Daisy (five years earlier).   What is the significance of this kiss?   Why does it impact Gatsby that way it does?   Why is this quote so important?

Thesis

1.   Give one example of the way in which Daisy does not live up to Gatsby's expectations. Does Gatsby get this?   Find a quote.

2.   Give another example of the way in which Daisy does not live up to Gatsby's expectations.   Does Gatsby see this?

3. What is the last example of the way in which Daisy fails to live up to Gatsby's dream?   Does Gatsby see it?

Conclusion

Question Three

3“The mouth was wide open and ripped at the corners as though she had choked a little in giving up the tremendous vitality she had stored so long”(145).   What does this statement mean?   How does Myrtle's American Dream kill her?   What is wrong with her dream?

Thesis:

  1. What is the first thing that is wrong with Myrtle's dream that leads her toward her death?

2.    What is the second thing that is wrong with Myrtle's dream that leads her toward her death?

3.  What is the final thing that is wrong with Myrtle's dream that leads to her death

Conclusion

Question four

4.   “No—Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporary closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men” (7).   What is it that preyed on Gatsby?   How does he turn out all right at the end?
