5^th Grade Math Units and Goals

Each unit is designed to help the girls’ understanding of basic mathematical skills and concepts. They should be able to do the following during the named unit:

Unit 1: Multiplication and Division with Whole Numbers

Ø Develop an understanding for the meaning of the word multiply

Ø Manipulate whole numbers in multiplication and division with one and two digit divisors

Ø Estimate multiplication and division

Ø Recognize and identify the 3 defined properties of numbers

Ø Multiply whole numbers and decimals

Unit 2: Fractions

Ø Understand the concept of a fraction

Ø Understand the connection between fractions and decimals

Ø Estimate sums, differences and products of fractions

Ø Complete operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Unit 3: Ratios, Proportions and Percents

Ø Understand the concept of a ratio

Ø Understand the link between percentage and fractions

Ø Estimate percentages

Ø Using mental math to find percentages

Unit 4: Data and Graphs

Ø Collect data and create a bar and line graph

Ø Interpret data to calculate mean, median and mode
