7th Grade Math Units and Goals

 

Each unit is designed to help the girlsÕ understanding of basic mathematical skills and concepts while introducing them to pre-algebra.  They should be able to do the following during the named unit: 

 

Unit 1: Real Numbers and Algebra

¯    Improved problem solving skills

¯    Manipulate real numbers with all operations

¯    Solve simple expressions and equations

¯    Demonstrate order of operations

¯    Understand the connection between fractions and decimals

¯    Complete operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

¯    Know and understand the Pythagorean Theorem

¯    Understand the coordinate plane

 

Unit 2: Proportional Reasoning

¯    Understand the concept of a ratio

¯    Solve proportions

¯    Understand the link between fractions, decimals and percents

¯    Estimate percentages using mental math

¯    Understand and identify similar polygons

 

Unit 3:  Geometry and Measurement

¯    Construct lines, angles, and similar polygons

¯    Demonstrate knowledge of symmetry, reflections, rotations and translations by identifying and drawing

¯    Calculate areas of polygons and circles

¯    Calculate surface area and volume of three-dimensional figures

 

Unit 4:  Algebra: Solving Multi-step Equations and Linear Functions

¯    Simplify algebraic expressions

¯    Solve two-step equations

¯    Solve Inequalities

¯    Graph linear functions and inequalities

¯    Identify and use the slope-intercept form of a line

 

Unit 5:  Probability and Statistics

¯    Use probability to predict outcomes

¯    Calculate permutations

¯    Create histograms

¯    Calculate measures of central tendency

¯    Complete calculations of matrices
