7^th Grade Math Units and Goals

Each unit is designed to help the girls’ understanding of basic mathematical skills and concepts while introducing them to pre-algebra. They should be able to do the following during the named unit:

Unit 1: Real Numbers and Algebra

Ø Improved problem solving skills

Ø Manipulate real numbers with all operations

Ø Solve simple expressions and equations

Ø Demonstrate order of operations

Ø Understand the connection between fractions and decimals

Ø Complete operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Ø Know and understand the Pythagorean Theorem

Ø Understand the coordinate plane

Unit 2: Proportional Reasoning

Ø Understand the concept of a ratio

Ø Solve proportions

Ø Understand the link between fractions, decimals and percents

Ø Estimate percentages using mental math

Ø Understand and identify similar polygons

Unit 3: Geometry and Measurement

Ø Construct lines, angles, and similar polygons

Ø Demonstrate knowledge of symmetry, reflections, rotations and translations by identifying and drawing

Ø Calculate areas of polygons and circles

Ø Calculate surface area and volume of three-dimensional figures

Unit 4: Algebra: Solving Multi-step Equations and Linear Functions

Ø Simplify algebraic expressions

Ø Solve two-step equations

Ø Solve Inequalities

Ø Graph linear functions and inequalities

Ø Identify and use the slope-intercept form of a line

Unit 5: Probability and Statistics

Ø Use probability to predict outcomes

Ø Calculate permutations

Ø Create histograms

Ø Calculate measures of central tendency

Ø Complete calculations of matrices
